JACK NICHOLSON

Here's a work in progress of a reworked sketch from a while back (does that make sense?). This man is just too cool.......

SEASONS GREETINGS!!!

Yes, I know it's about as imaginative as a Westlife single but I'm just on the way to the airport so it'll have to do!
Hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a great 2009!
Thanks to all of you who visited my blog this year!!

THE JOKER (work in progress)

It was while recently watching a repeat of the original 1960's Batman tv series that gave me the inspiration for this.
I thought it would make a nice change to pay tribute to Cesar Romero's Joker character as it was one of my favorite as a kid and still is to this day.

ANOTHER GIFT CARICATURE

Here's one that was presented to a colleague in work last week, to commemorate their time spent as Head of the department that I work for.
Unfortunately I wasn't there when the finished version was presented but by all accounts, it went down very well indeed!!

BJORK

This was done as a entry for the monthly Caricature jam over on the Drawing Board
This is an updated version of an attempt I made about three years ago that ended up being temporarily shelved so I decided to give a bit of a makeover.

GIFT CARICATURE

Here's another commissioned piece I completed a few weeks ago but as it was only presented earlier today, I had to keep it under wraps!!

ELVIS PRELVIS

I started this a week or so ago but it still needs a bit of tweaking.
The folks over on the Drawing Board have given me some helpful pointers so hopefully it'll help with the likeness a bit more.......

Just for the record, this is how I actually wanted it to look. I kind of cheated by doing this but for the benefit of the purists out there, I'll be re-drawing it from scratch to get it right.

Here's another update, As you can see, I've gone against my better judgement and decided to stick with the original shaped face.

YOU'D HAVE TO BE THERE.......

Long story short, I accidentally broke my wife Karen's handbag today.
Here is a re-enactment of the incident:

JFK

Here's another one straight off the production line. It's not quite finished yet ('why are you posting it then!!?, I hear you cry) but I'm almost there so the final version won't look THAT much different......

Another legendary Irish author and the source of a million and one quotes.

OWEN WILSON

All I can say is, What. A. Nose.
In fact, I'm not sure I've done it justice with this drawing. I think it's a bit on the tame side but I'm happy enough with it....for now.

CARICATURE EXHIBITION!

I was recently asked to submit some of my work for an upcoming exhibition being held in Edinburgh at the end of November.
This is something of a first for me so it's very exciting, not only to be have my work shown in public but also to have it shown alongside some of the best and most talented caricature artists around. Sadly, I won't be able to be there myself but if you're from or near the area, please stop by and check it out!!
Thanks to Craig Rogalski for bringing it together!!
Here's the link for the exhibition.

MATT RYDER

Here's a quick sketch of fellow NCN'er, Matt Ryder from Dubai.

OBAMA MARK II

I didn't feel my first Obama attempt was turning out how I wanted so I decided to give it another approach from a completely different perspective:

THE PRESIDENT (ELECT) OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Strangely enough, this is my first time doing this guy. Not sure what took me so long seeing as every other caricature artist I know has drawn him at least 20 times.

Update: 10/11/08 (a few slight changes made)

NEW PROMOTIONAL BANNER

Well, after nearly three years of doing live caricatures, I finally got my act together and invested in some new self-promotional material.
This is a roller display banner that was put together for me at very short notice (thanks to Declan and the guys at Snap printing!!) and I have to say, I'm chuffed to bits with the way it turned out!!

WAYNE ROONEY

Yet another old pen sketch I found lying in the vaults that needed a bit of life injected into it! If my memory serves me right, none of the footballers I've caricatured have been Liverpool players. ARGH!

GEORGE LUCAS

It's not often that I draw full bodies so I decided to start getting into the habit with this effort. Not sure if this idea has already been done but what the hell........
There's still a bit of rendering to be done on this so I'll be posting updates.

RICKY GERVAIS

This is yet another caricature I did a while back and was never really happy with so I decided to have another shot at him. I'm still not sure it's him though. There's something about that mouth...........

Update: I've made a few changes. I think I'm a lot happier with this version......

NICK CAVE

This started out as a rough sketch a few months ago and I decided to revisit it to give it the colour treatment. It's still a bit rough but it's an improvement........I think.

Update:

RECENT GIFT CARICATURES

Here's a couple of recent commissioned pieces............

PADRAIG HARRINGTON

After a great year so far, this man has a lot to live up to in this year's Ryder Cup against the Americans. Can we open another can of WHOOP ASS on the Yanks? It pains me to say it but I can't see it happening this time around.........

Thursday, September 11, 2008

PETE EMSLIE

I've been going a bit gung-ho with the pencil lately! This is a 'payback sketch' of the master of character design and illustration, Pete Emslie who drew my big ugly mug not so long ago......

THE TWO RONNIES

These guys are comedy legends and real heroes of mine. Their brand of comedy is still as funny as it was back then.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

The enigmatic movie director extraordinaire. I have a few ideas for the cigar but I haven't quite decided on one yet........

NEW SKETCHES

A couple of new sketches to pass the time......the obligatory Winehouse sketch and the gentle (?) giant of heavy metal, James Hetfield from Metallica.

ANOTHER ME!

This piece of genius was done by the very talented Sean Gardner on the NCN earlier today. It left me gobsmacked to say the least but I absolutely love it. You'll see from his blog that he likes to exaggerate ever so slightly..........

WOODY ALLEN

It was watching the hilarious 'Take the Money and Run' the other night that inspired me to do this one. Took about 2 and a half hours in total using Photoshop.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.......

As a kid, I always loved drawing comic book characters and superheroes and I think in some ways, I've never grown out of it.
I don't really know that much about Hellboy but I think he's the coolest comic book character I've ever seen. This is a very rough colour piece done in Photoshop. I will definitely be finishing this one.

CAPELLO UPDATE

I've given the Capello sketch a splash of colour with a few other changes made from the original. It's a long way from being finished but I'll try to post updates along the way.....

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

FABIO CAPELLO

I seem to be functioning on auto-pilot at the moment with these sketches. Hopefully I don't lose sight of any Quality Control as a result!!
Here's a sketch of the current England football coach, Fabio Capello

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

MICHAEL STIPE

I've made numerous attempts with this guy but I've ended up shelving every single one. I'm still not sure if I've managed to nail it but I thought I'd still post it anyway. Just another plain ol' biro sketch.......

LARRY KING

This is a quick biro sketch (15 minutes in total) of long serving American talk show host, Larry King.

HOLIDAY SKETCHES

I've just returned from an amazing two week holiday in glorious Croatia. We spent the first week on the Island of Korcula which incuded a day trip to Mljet which is said to be ranked among the top 10 most beautiful islands in the world. The second week was spent in the cultural capital, Dubrovnik.
If you've not been, you're missing out big time. It's simply beautiful.
Anyway, I decided to take my sketchbook with me and churned out a few pages of observational sketches from the beach, hotel lobbies, cafes, bars, you name it. The most difficult part was trying not to get caught in mid-sketch!

RECENT LIVE WORK

Here are a few snaps from a wedding I did a few weeks ago for Niall O'Loughlin at the plush surroundings of the Leopardstown racecourse. Probably one of the biggest weddings I've ever seen.
